Catechesis for Family Life

Often the values we would like to pass on to our children are not reflected in our contemporary culture.  We must work deliberately to pass on our beliefs because no one else is doing this for us.  Holy Family would like to help you present your children with a healthy, life-giving, and positive message about human sexuality.  Our curriculum for Catechesis for Family Life is rooted in wholesome human values, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His teachings, and is in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  It is catechesis in virtuous Christian living and youth protection.

Grades K-6

Our K-6 classes use the text Family Life by Catholic publisher R.C.L. Benziger.  The ten chapters of the book are presented over five sessions scattered throughout the year in our Centralized Program.  Every grade covers the grade specific content during the same five sessions.  Family Life comes with a parent guide (given out at the beginning of each year) which offers information on each chapter including more detailed information than what will be covered in the sessions.  Parents are to review the material with their child before the chapter is covered in the classroom.

Grades 7 & 8

Grades 7-8 use a retreat model from the Archdiocese of Baltimore called Created to Love.  This provides the additional support parents have requested in presenting issues of morality and healthy relationships to their children.  We are able to offer this retreat model during one of our regularly scheduled classes.  Refer to the Faith Formation class schedule for the specific day for the 7th and 8th grades.  At these classes, parents and students spend part of the time together and then also break into groups for more focused attention at the different levels.

Reviewing Materials

Holy Family encourages and invites parents to review the topics and materials of this grade-specific curriculum. Student, family and catechist resources are available at the parish office. Please contact us  if you are interested in previewing the materials or would like to discuss the curriculum.

Opting Out

Families with children in any of our K-8 Faith Formation Programs who would rather cover these topics at home are able to opt-out. We ask that these families simply complete an opt-out form and return it to the parish office.   Contact the Faith Formation office to learn more about opting-out.
